Main purpose of fellowship

Under the direct supervision of the study principal investigators, Prof Dan O’Neil (Yale University) and Dr Maureen Joffe (University of Witwatersrand).


i) Perform qualitative needs analysis research through in-depth interviews and focus group sessions with identified stakeholders (policy makers, tertiary and primary care providers and administrators, patients, and NGO representatives).

ii) Participate in, organise and at times lead monthly stakeholder advisory group meetings,

iii) Manage and jointly train fieldworkers in breast cancer screening, data collection, and patient navigation,

iv) Participate with stakeholders in the co-creation of an intervention aimed at increasing early detection of breast cancer in 3-4 primary care clinics in Soweto,

v) Initiate and manage a cluster randomised trial in the 3-4 clinics.

Required minimum education and training

PhD in Social Sciences or Psychology or other relevant fields.

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

Must be experienced in qualitative research,

It will be an advantage to have cancer research experience or implementation science research experience involving needs analysis research and/or field operationalisation of interventional trials (not just drug trials).

Must be familiar with implementation science conceptual frameworks, social sciences and/or behavioural change models.

Friendly outgoing personality.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Good emotional intelligence.

Must be familiar with the Public Health System.

Have experience in managing study support staff (trained fieldworkers) will be an advantage.
